Cheverus High School of Portland field hockey standout Hannah Abbott, daughter of former University of Maine athletic director Steve Abbott and granddaughter of former Black Bear head football coach and AD Walter Abbott, signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Black Bears next fall.

Abbott, a two-time Maine All-State player, was the team’s leading scorer in 2016 with 14 goals but showed her versatility by being named the team’s top defensive player this season as she helped the Stags post seven shutouts and limit opponents to 16 goals in 14 regular season games.

Abbott was the team’s Most Valuable Player a year ago and is a two-time Southern Maine Athletic Association first team selection.

She has captained the team the past two years.

She is also a standout track athlete at Cheverus where she is a shot putter and participant in the 4 by 100 relay.

Seven months ago, in a story in the Forecaster, Cheverus coach Sally Cloutier said Abbott was a “force offensively and defensively.

“She’s mentally and physically tough, takes her play seriously and expects the same from her teammates. She is a playmaker, smart with the ball, fast and explosive as well as poised defensively,” said Cloutier.

Her coming to UMaine is dependent upon her being accepted into the school and meeting NCAA eligibility requirements.
