Delta Air Lines scrubbed 625 flights at its Atlanta hub, the world’s busiest airport, amid a snowstorm.
The airline bumped up the cancellations throughout the day Friday as it worked to remove ice from aircraft. Atlanta, where the carrier is based, is under a winter storm warning until 10 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service said.
Airlines had canceled at least 947 flights into, out of or within the U.S. by about 4:30 p.m. Friday, according to FlightAware.com, an online tracking service. The most grounded flights and delays were reported at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Unusually wintry weather blanketed the U.S. South from Alabama to parts of Texas, with Corpus Christi, Texas, getting more than four inches of snow, according to Accuweather. The snow in Houston was the earliest seasonal snowfall on record and the first time the city received measurable levels since Dec. 4, 2009.
