A seal abandoned by its mother in Phippsburg was rescued, rehabilitated and now released back into the wild, according to CapeCod.com.
In keeping with a recent naming trend by the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, where the animals are rehabilitated, the Maine seal was named for a celebrity. In this case, Scarlett Johanseal, after “The Avengers” actress Scarlett Johansson.
The release back into the icy waters off Cape Cod took place Sunday, according to CapeCod.com
Previous seals rescued from Maine and rehabilitated at the center received the names Giseal Bundchen and Sealonardo DiCaprio, after the supermodel and Academy Award-winning actor, respectively.
A National Marine Life Center official told the Boston Globe previously the center picks a new theme each year for naming its seals, and for the last two seasons, the theme has been “seal-ebrities.”
Executive Director Kathy Zagzebski told the Globe seal mothers can abandon pups for a number of reasons. The mothers might be scared off by people near the pups, for instance, she said.
