Jersey Subs & Sweets, a new sandwich, ice cream and candy shop and soda fountain in downtown Bangor, opened for business on Monday.
The eatery, owned by Orono resident Jason Coleman, offers New Jersey-style subs, all named after Garden State icons and locations. Everything in Jason Coleman’s new eatery is New Jersey themed, including a number of photos on the walls of famous New Jersey natives, like Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Jack Nicholson.
All sandwiches are served with lettuce, tomato, onion, salt and pepper, oil and vinegar, oregano and provolone cheese, on a sub roll — the kind of sub found throughout New Jersey. It’s not unlike a Maine Italian, though this state’s version generally has a greater variety of vegetables on it.
“I’ve eaten a lot of sandwiches in the past few months, and I think we’ve gotten it exactly to where we want it,” said Coleman, grew up in New Jersey and also coaches the Orono High School boys basketball team.
Jersey Subs & Sweets also serves Gifford’s Ice Cream, specializing in milkshakes, which are half price between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. It also offers an array of penny candy at $7.99 per pound, and house-made draft sodas.
Jersey Subs is located at 25 Hammond St., in between Bahaar Pakistani Restaurant and The Grind House, a new coffee and sandwich shop opening in the former location of Giacomo’s. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
