A woman was found dead Sunday morning in a car submerged on its roof in the Medomak River in Waldoboro, according to Waldoboro police.
Melissa Sawyer, 48, of Damariscotta was identified as the victim, She formerly lived in Waldoboro and worked for many years as a secretary at a local middle school, Waldoboro Police Chief William Labombarde said in a news release.
Police responded about 7 a.m. Sunday to the report of a vehicle submerged in the river at the intersection of Atlantic Highway and Kalers Korner Road, the release said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, Labombarde said. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department is assisting with reconstruction.
The car was removed from the river Sunday, and then taken to the Waldoboro police station so Sawyer’s body could be removed.
The victim’s friends and family members gathered at the news conference at the Waldoboro Town office where the death notification was made, the chief said.
