A Portland man has suffered life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound stemming from an altercation on Tuesday night, police said.

A nearby Portland police officer saw the altercation on Oxford Street, near Elm Street, and heard the sound of gunfire around 10:30 p.m. He ran to the area and rendered aid to a 45-year-old man with a bullet wound in his stomach. The man was taken to Maine Medical Center.
