A water main break has shut down the portion of Main Street in Bangor beneath the Interstate 395 overpass.
Bangor Public Works and Water District crews blocked off that portion of road on Wednesday morning to make emergency repairs to the underground line, Bangor police Sgt. Jason McAmbley said.
“Bangor Water responded to a leak on an eight-inch water line feeding the fire sprinkler system to a lower Main Street building at 7:30 last night,” the Water District wrote on Facebook. “This morning at 5, the water main that feeds the sprinkler line broke during the repair process.”
The road block could remain in effect until early evening, officials said.

It did not snarl traffic during the Wednesday morning commute because drivers headed away from downtown were still able to board the entrance ramp onto the highway. In the opposite direction, drivers were able to exit the highway and continue downtown.
But drivers cannot drive down Main Street beneath the bridge, meaning those headed toward Hampden — or coming from Hampden into Bangor — will need to find a new route.
