A pair of Maine organizations is getting help from the federal government for programs that provide legal assistance to victims of domestic violence.
The money totals more than $1 million and it is going to Next Step Domestic Violence Project in Ellsworth and Caring Unlimited Corporation in Sanford. It’s coming from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program and Improving Criminal Justice Response Program.
Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King say the grants will help make sure survivors of domestic violence “have access to every resource available to ensure their safety.”
Next Step executive director Dorathy Martel says the money will help continue the group’s ability to provide free legal representation to domestic violence victims in Washington and Hancock counties.
