A Cumberland County sheriff’s corrections officer has been accused of trafficking in cocaine, according to police and media reports.
David Glazener, 22, of South Portland was arrested Tuesday night after a joint investigation by South Portland police, the sheriff’s office and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency into alleged drug trafficking by a county correctional officer, the sheriff’s office said in a statement Wednesday.
A search warrant was executed at Glazener’s residence, where Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said officers seized cocaine and took Glazener into custody, according to CBS affiliate WGME.
It’s unclear whether any drug activity took place within the jail.
Joyce told WGME that Glazener has worked for the county for two years and that he had no criminal history.
Joyce told the Portland TV station that Cumberland County is one of few sheriff’s departments that conducts polygraphs and background checks for potential officers.
“This is a case where you always scratch your head, say, ‘What else could we have done to keep the individual out of this profession that could have or actually did what this individual did?’” Joyce told WGME. “And the answer is — I don’t have an answer. Some people just when you do a polygraph or background track, they don’t have the propensity and then somehow that train leaves the tracks.”
The case remains under investigation and additional charges could be forthcoming, according to the sheriff’s office.
