Good morning. Temperatures will be in the mid-50s with rain showers in the afternoon.

Here’s what we’re talking about in Maine today.

A nursing home where inspectors found mistreated residents is going up for auction

It was once the town of Penobscot’s biggest taxpayer. But the Northern Bay Residential Living Center has been empty since 2016. Its nursing home portion closed in 2014 after inspectors found staff had mistreated residents and the facility had substandard conditions.

Now, it will go up for auction on Nov. 20.

What does an aging Maine look like?

Almost one in five Pine Tree State residents age 65 and older is still working, according to the latest U.S. Census data. The new demographic data gives some hints as to what the rest of that age group is doing.

Overall, 19.3 percent of Mainers are 65 or older, with 11.4 percent falling into the 65 to 75 age group, 5.3 percent in the 75 to 84 group and 2.6 percent in the 85 and older group.

A political mailer in Brewer has the school department crying foul

The mailer, paid for and authorized by the House Republican Fund, featured the Brewer Witches logo on one side, and a message “From the desks of Ed Youngblood and Ed Donnelly” endorsing Craig, R-Brewer, in Tuesday’s election on the other.

But the school department issued a statement clarifying that it hasn’t endorsed a candidate.

Diana Estey’s disappearance ‘doesn’t make any sense’

When Medford resident Diana Estey disappeared from her house on Nov. 2, 2016, neighbors noticed the lights had been left on overnight, and the front door was unlocked. Her car was in the driveway, yet the 71-year-old woman was nowhere to be found.

Two years have passed since Diana Estey was last seen, on Oct. 31, 2016, and her disappearance has left the tiny Piscataquis County community of 245 people unsettled.

A young hunter from Bucksport ended up with an adventure to remember over the weekend as he dealt with foul weather, a few fruitless sessions afield and an unsuccessful search for a deer before finding a buck with a striking set of antlers.

In Maine, large animal owners look to themselves for most veterinary type care

Anyone who raises animals is all too familiar with this one fact: when it comes to animals, if it can happen, it will. Just ask Anne Gobes, a Southport alpaca farmer who last year had one of her males stick his nose in a porcupine hole and get quills in his nose.

But as Maine owners of large animals know, large animal veterinarians are hard to come by in some areas of the state. So the Gobes removed the quills themselves.

Do this: Go see ‘Crucible’ in Belfast

“Midcoast’s production, combined with tragic current events, have made Arthur Miller’s message more than timely. It is now urgent that his warning be heard anew and headed,” writes the BDN’s Judy Harrison. “‘The Crucible’ in Belfast is theater at its finest in nearly every way. It should not be missed.”

“The Crucible” will be performed at 7:30 p.m Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Crosby Center, 96 Church St., Belfast. For more information, call 207-370-7592 or visit midcoastactors.org.
