PORTLAND, Maine — Everyone has that hard-to-shop-for family member, like an aunt or uncle who seems to have everything. Well, this holiday season in Maine, there truly is a one-of-a-kind gift available: A professional football team.
The one-year-old Maine Mammoths arena football team is on the market, according to a Tuesday announcement by the team. That doesn’t mean the Mammoths are seeking to leave Portland, where they played their inaugural season in 2018, the current ownership group said.
“Our primary goal with the Maine Mammoths was to get the team up and running with a strong team of players and coaches while establishing a solid relationship with Cross Insurance Arena where the team will play again in the 2019 season,” the founding ownership group National Sports Ventures, said in a statement. “Now that those goals have exceeded our expectations, we are looking for new owners to continue and lead the team into even greater success.”
The Mammoths play in the two-year-old National Arena League, where they rallied to win six of their last seven games in their first season to finish 7-8 and garner the league’s Franchise Of The Year Award.
National Sports Ventures did not release an asking price for the team, but according to previous reports, prospective National Arena League owners are required to establish a $100,000 line of credit.
For market reference, a New Hampshire-based team which played in a now-defunct arena minor league once sold for the equivalent of $1.41 million in 2018 dollars, according to Forbes magazine.
The Mammoths are led by head coach James Fuller and quarterback Jonathan Bane, who scored 59 total touchdowns for the team.
