TOPSHAM, Maine — A 27-year-old Litchfield man suffered leg injuries when he was struck by a red Ford Focus Monday night in an apparent road rage incident on Route 201, according to police.

The victim, who was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, told police that he was headed north on Route 201, also known as Augusta Road, in a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck at about 5 p.m. when the driver of a red Ford Focus began operating erratically and at one point bumped his bumper, Topsham police Lt. Fred Dunn said Tuesday.

Both vehicles pulled to the side of the road, and the victim said that when he approached the Ford Focus, the car drove off, striking him and continuing north on Route 201.

Dunn said the victim did not see the other driver closely enough to determine if they were male or female.

Police continue to search for the Ford Focus, which Dunn said would not necessarily show any damage.

The driver could potentially face charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and driving to endanger.

“We’re trying to determine what the motive was behind it,” Dunn said.

The victim’s condition was not immediately available Tuesday.
