The Hiram Fire Department responded to an early Saturday morning blaze that left one person dead, four survivors and the building destroyed.

Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office said 19-year-old Alexander Mudgett, who lived at the house with friends, died during the fire. His body was found on the first floor, at the foot of the stairs, which investigators said indicate he was attempting to escape the fire, according to a release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Two men and two women in their 20s escaped the fire by crawling out the bedroom windows onto the roof, and then jumping to the ground. One of the survivors received a minor leg injury, but the survivors were otherwise uninjured.

A neighbor notified the Hiram Fire Department at around 5 a.m. Saturday morning. Investigators say there were no smoke detectors in the house, and that the fire likely started on the first floor or underneath the house, according to McCausland. The building was destroyed in the fire, with only one wall remaining.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
