NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine — Christmas wreath companies in Maine are feeling the pressure of rising shipping costs and other market changes.

The Kennebec Journal reports Christmas Tree Acres Wreath Co. recently closed because “shipping expenses have become too exorbitant.” The Norridgewock company is one of several Maine wreath companies that have been hit hard by increased shipping costs.

In 2015, UPS and FedEx added the size of a package into their pricing. Harbor Farm Wreaths owner Michael Leman says any company using large boxes have been affected.

Early winter storms have also hurt companies. Conditions this year prevented people from collecting wreath “tips” in wooded areas, causing a material shortage. Customers are turning to local businesses instead of New England companies as well.

Experts say the Maine industry’s future is uncertain.
