Maine State Police arrested a Hartford man Thursday evening in connection with the death of his longtime girlfriend.

Rondon Athayde, 46, was charged with the murder of 41-year-old Ana Cordeiro, who died inside their home, according to a news release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Athayde was arrested around 6 p.m. and taken to the Oxford County Jail. He is expected to make his first court appearance Friday in Oxford County Superior Court.

The state medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy Dec. 13 and determined the death was a homicide, though the exact cause of death has not been released.

Athayde and Cordeiro have two young children who are in the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The couple, who are originally from Brazil, moved to Maine from Miami about two years ago. Cordeiro worked at Lowe’s in Auburn, McCausland said.
