A man and woman from Orneville allegedly led police on a chase through the streets, woods and backyards of Bangor midday Friday.
They first drove away from officers in a stolen truck that had been stopped on Broadway, then ditched the vehicle and ran away on foot, according to a news release from the Bangor Police Department.
Police arrested both people after they allegedly fled through woods and backyards along Broadway, Sgt. Wade Betters wrote in the release.
Officers searched for the pair after finding the stolen truck abandoned but still running behind an assisted living facility near the intersection of Broadway and Husson Avenue, Betters said.
They found the man, 44-year-old Joseph Medeiros, running near the intersection of Broadway and Griffin Road, Betters said. They spotted the woman, 27-year-old Kayla Heasely, allegedly trying to hitchhike on Broadway.
Police first responded to that area around 11 a.m. after someone reported that the couple was doing unspecified drugs in the parking lot of a local business.
The black Dodge Truck had been reported stolen from LaGrange a few days earlier, and the two people had also been arrested on unrelated charges a day before the police chase.
On Thursday, Medeiros was charged with drug possession and violation of conditions of release, Betters said. The next day, after allegedly fleeing police, he was arrested on charges of eluding an officer, violating conditions of release and refusal to submit to arrest.
Eluding an officer is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine. The other two charges are Class E misdemeanors each punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Medeiros was allegedly driving the truck Friday.
On Thursday, Heasely was charged with theft and violation of conditions of release. On Friday, she was arrested on charges of violation of conditions of release and refusal to submit to arrest, both Class E misdemeanors, as well as a warrant for failing to appear in court.
Members of the Maine Warden Service and Maine State Police helped find the suspects, Betters said. The latter agency is investigating the theft of the truck from LaGrange.
