A head-on crash on Route 302 in Casco early Friday morning sent two people to Central Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight of Maine.
At about 5:18 a.m., a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze crossed the centerline and struck a 2001 Subaru Legacy head on in the area known as Watkins Flats, Capt. Scott Stewart of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
The impact trapped the single occupants in each vehicle and dislodged the Chevrolet’s engine. The engine then caught fire on the road. Firefighters from Casco, Naples and Raymond worked to extricate both drivers.
The driver of the Subaru, Leonard Grover, 47, and the driver of the Chevrolet, Alana Eidemiller, 34, both of Casco, were taken by LifeFlight of Central Maine to Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, according to Stewart.
Their conditions were not immediately available.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office reconstruction unit.
Route 302, also known as Roosevelt Trail, was closed for about three hours.
