A fire destroyed a Saco apartment building early Thursday morning.

The blaze broke out about 1:30 a.m. at the 2-unit condominium on Seaside Avenue between Bayview Beach and Ferry Beach State Park, according to CBS affiliate WGME.

When firefighters arrived, heavy flames and smoke were coming from the second floor of the building and roof, WGME reported. It took firefighters from Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough and Saco two hours to get the flames under control.

Several fire departments have responded to the scene, and frigid temperatures in the low single digits have added to the difficulty of battling the blaze, according to WGME.

Saco Fire Chief John Duross told WGME the bitter cold made fighting the fire even more difficult.

The cause has not been determined, and the building is a total loss.
