Traffic was diverted from Route 1 northbound in Bath from late Wednesday night into Thursday morning because of a tractor-trailer crash near the Congress Avenue overpass.

Just before 11 p.m., Bath police were called to the area after a tractor-trailer went off the road and jackknifed, according to Deputy Chief Robert Savary of the Bath Police Department.

While the truck didn’t completely block the road, police diverted traffic onto State Road at the New Meadows exit in order to avoid more crashes.

The driver, who was not injured, told police that a car in front of him swerved and fishtailed. When he slowed and turned to avoid the vehicle, it caused his truck to go off the road.

Savary said the detour lasted until about 7 a.m., and attributed the delay to waiting for tow trucks to arrive.

The name of the driver and of the company the truck was registered to were not available Thursday morning.
