Police have identified the pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle in Turner.

Catherine Gauthier of Turner was hit by a pickup truck at 8:55 p.m. Thursday while walking north on Route 4, according to the preliminary investigation by police.

Roger S. Keene Jr., 48, of Turner was driving north on Route 4 in his blue 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck and did not see Gauthier. Keene is cooperating with police, according to Chief Deputy William Gagne of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.

Minutes before the accident, the sheriff’s office received calls that a woman was walking along Route 4 wearing dark clothing, which made her difficult to see, Gagne said.

Deputies went to the scene to investigate the situation and arrived after the crash occurred, Gagne said.

The 36-year-old Gauthier died at the scene from her injuries. She lived within a half-mile of the crash location.

The sheriff’s office has since received other calls notifying them that other drivers witnessed the woman and that there were “several other close calls,” Gagne said.

A portion of Route 4 — between Lower Street and Potato Road — was closed to traffic for several hours on Thursday night.

The crash remains under investigation. The findings of the investigation will be sent to the district attorney’s office for review, which is standard with fatalities. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, Gagne said.
