A Hartford man died early Saturday morning when the sport utility vehicle he was driving veered off Route 133 in Wayne and struck a utility pole.
Michael Fitzherbert, 35, was northbound on the rural highway at about 1:30 a.m. when he apparently lost control of his 2001 Chevy Blazer and drove off the right side of the roadway, according to a statement from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The vehicle hit a utility pole then flipped onto its roof.
Fitzherbert was not wearing a seat belt, according to McCausland. He was partially ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to state troopers.
The crash temporarily knocked out electricity to Central Maine Power customers in the area.
An initial investigation indicates that speed was a contributing factor in the fatal crash.
