A fox that was killed Friday afternoon by two dogs on Bayshore Road in Bath has tested positive for rabies.
According to a release from Bath police Chief Michael Field, the Bath animal control officer went to the scene at 2 p.m. Friday. The remains of the fox were tested at the Maine Health and Environmental Center in Augusta, where staff determined the fox did have rabies, Field said.
The dogs will be revaccinated and confined or quarantined as necessary, he said.
Field urged people to keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations, and to call the animal control officer or veterinarian if they see any unusual wildlife activity or if they or their pets come in contact with potentially rabid mammals.
