The Portland woman who died Monday in an apartment fire has been identified.

Linda Butterworth, 64, was found dead Monday afternoon after a fire ripped through her Portland apartment where the fire originated, according to Portland police Lt. Robert Martin.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 609 Ocean Ave. about 4 p.m., Martin said.

The Maine fire marshal’s office determined the fire was likely accidental and caused by smoking material igniting the fabric of a chair in Butterworth’s living area, Martin said.

The Maine medical examiner’s office determined that Butterworth did not die as a result of the fire, Martin said. Her cause of death won’t be determined until after a toxicology test.

Martin said working smoke detectors and a quick response from tenants who called 911 limited the damage to Butterworth’s apartment.
