Route 1A in northern Ellsworth was shut down to traffic for several hours Tuesday afternoon because of a bad crash, but reopened around 5 p.m., according to the Ellsworth Police Department.

The crash occurred on MacGowan Hill, a stretch of road between Nicolin and Winkumpaugh roads, a dispatcher with the department said shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Details about the accident were unavailable late Tuesday afternoon. Officials with the Ellsworth Police Department said they expected details to be released Tuesday evening.

Despite traffic being redirected around the crash scene through Dedham, Orland and Bucksport, cars and trucks still were backed up for miles. Northbound traffic on Route 1A was backed up as far south as Oak Street in downtown Ellsworth, a distance of approximately 10 miles, before traffic began to flow freely again in both directions.
