Officials in Maine plan to meet with members of the public to help residents understand the state’s efforts to protect two endangered birds that nest in popular beach areas.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is holding the informational session at 5 p.m. Thursday at Scarborough Town Hall. The event is about the state’s activities to protect the piping plover and the least tern.
The state’s working to protect the birds on Popham and Scarborough beaches. The wildlife department said both birds remain on the state endangered list, but they’ve rebounded slowly over recent years.
The state uses temporary fencing around nesting sites to help protect the birds from disruption and predators. It said protection of those sites is critical to continued protection of the vulnerable birds.
