A man was seriously injured after crashing his motorcycle Sunday evening in New Portland, according to police. He remains at a Lewiston hospital in critical condition.

Cedric Collins, 28, of New Portland was riding his 2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Meadowbrook Road around 7:30 p.m. He apparently lost control while rapidly accelerating, causing the motorcycle to fishtail. Collins was ejected from his motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Collins was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a severe head injury. He remains in critical condition, Mitchell said.

“Prior to the crash, Collins was observed by witnesses conducting power turns in the roadway near the scene of the accident,” Mitchell said.

The crash is still under investigation by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, though it appears operating a motorcycle in an unsafe manner and speed were factors in the crash. It will be further reviewed for any potential charges, Mitchell said.
