A Bowdoinham man was seriously injured on Saturday morning when the helicopter he was flying crashed at the Sanford Regional Airport.
Jack White, 50, was returning to the Sanford airport after flying to several locations across Maine and New Hampshire as part of his helicopter licensing process about 10:24 a.m., when the helicopter began spinning uncontrollably and crashed, Sanford police Sgt. Jason Wagner said.
Witnesses told police that White appeared to be practicing landing or near-ground maneuvers moments before the crash, according to Wagner.
White was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was treated for serious injuries, Wagner said.
Wagner said that the cause of the uncontrolled spin is unknown at this time, and the investigation in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board is ongoing.
