Isaac Varney’s senior season at Hermon High School ended a bit prematurely because of a foot injury. When he is fully recovered, the versatile forward will continue his basketball career close to home.

Varney is the latest area basketball standout to announce his intention to attend Husson University in Bangor next fall.

The 6-foot-4 forward from Glenburn joins Caribou star Parker Deprey and University of Southern Maine transfer Cam Wood of Winthrop in coach Warren Caruso’s recruiting class.

Varney was a four-year starter for coach Mark Reed at Hermon, where he helped the Hawks claim the 2018 Class B state championship amid an undefeated season.

“We felt Isaac was one of the top seniors in the state this year. We are excited to have him join our program,” Husson head coach Warren Caruso said. “Isaac is very versatile. He can play anywhere on the floor and defends very well. He makes plays at both ends to help his team win.”

Prior to his injury, Varney helped spearhead Hermon to a 70-7 record over nearly four full seasons. As a senior, he averaged 17.9 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.4 assists and shot 54.8 percent from the field.

Varney, who eclipsed 1,000 career points this season, was a three-time Big East Conference first-team selection after earning second-team recognition as a freshman.

Last summer, he played AAU basketball for Blue Wave Basketball out of Portland, a team coached by former Husson star Robert “Pils” Pilsbury.

Husson is coming off a 12-15 season during which it qualified for its 35th consecutive appearance in the league postseason tournament while advancing to the North Atlantic Conference semifinals.
