MONTVILLE, Maine — For the second time in four years, firefighters were called to Peavey’s General Store to quell a blaze.
But unlike the fire in November 2016, which gutted the store and caused it to move to a different location, firefighters on Monday were able to put it out quickly. Chief John York of the Montville Fire Department estimated that the damage caused by the fire would likely be measured “in the thousands” of dollars, not more.
Crews from Montville, Liberty, Searsmont, Freedom and Morrill responded, along with the Liberty Ambulance service, he said. No one was injured while fighting the fire, which he said was electrical in origin.
Peavey’s General Store — along with the rest of the town of Montville — had lost power during last week’s storm, but York said he believed power had been restored to the store on Sunday night.

Owner Carrie Peavey discovered the fire in the back entrance to the building Monday morning, and called the fire department right away. York said that he and others responded quickly after receiving the 11 a.m. call, perhaps in just a couple of minutes or so.
“Maybe the fact that I was sitting in the firehouse helped,” he said.
The Maine state fire marshal came to the store later Monday, in order to determine whether the electrical problem was caused by storm damage or something else, York said.
