A Portland convenience store was robbed at gunpoint early Friday morning, according to police.

A man entered the 7-Eleven on Forest Avenue about 4 a.m. and brandished a black semi-automatic handgun, demanding money from a clerk, Portland police Lt. Robert Martin said.

The clerk, who was the only other person in the store, complied and the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, Martin said.

The clerk was not injured in the robbery.

The suspect, who was described as a 5-foot-7 white man, fled toward the Hannaford parking lot on Riverside Street, where he got into a small, dark-colored sedan and drove toward Washington Street, according to Martin.

Martin said the suspect was balding and heavy set. He added that the suspect also wore a gray zippered jacket over a maroon crew neck sweatshirt as well as glasses.

Anyone with information about the robbery can contact the Portland Police Department at (207) 874-8575.
