Police arrested a man in Brewer Saturday night after a several-hour standoff outside his home on State Street.

Antonio Burke, 48, was charged with attempted aggravated assault, domestic violence criminal threatening and criminal mischief after allegedly attempting to assault another person with a knife, damaging property and threatening to return with a firearm to murder his ex-girlfriend and her children.

Police were called at approximately 6:30 p.m. to a home on Union Street in Brewer, but Burke had left there by the time they arrived.

Police then went to his residence at 100 State St. and made phone contact with him, but Burke refused to leave his home and surrender, police said.

Negotiators with Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Orono Police continued discussions with Burke while an arrest warrant and a search warrant were obtained for Burke and his residence.

Negotiators successfully convinced Burke to surrender at nearly midnight, and he came out of his home unarmed and was arrested.
