A home on Broadway is a total loss after a fire broke out there on Sunday morning.

When crews arrived at 311 Broadway , the fire was “fully involved” and flames were coming out of the front windows and door, Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Philip Hamm said. The fire later traveled up the home’s stairway and came out the second story windows.

A young family lived in the home, but were able to escape, he said.

The department’s three stations and crews fought the fire with assistance from the Air National Guard. The Orono and Brewer fire departments covered the city in the meantime.

It took crews 35-40 minutes to extinguish the flames, Hamm said.

No one was seriously injured, but the family was taken to nearby St. Joseph Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, he said.

Crews blocked off part of Broadway during the blaze, but it was reopened just before 11 a.m..

Hamm urged others to be careful about how they stay warm during this cold stretch, and to be cautious when using wood stoves, space heaters, kerosene heaters and home ranges.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
