Lee Academy 51, Penobscot Valley 50 (OT)
Two buzzer-beaters add to an exciting game in Howland.
At Howland, Ethan Allard collected a rebound on a last-second airball, and converted the lay-up in mid-air at the buzzer to propel the Pandas past the Howlers in overtime. Lee was down by one point at the time.
Lee appeared to have the game wrapped up in regulation as they had just gone up by 3 with only three seconds remaining. PVHS, needing to go the length of the court, inbounded the ball to Gabe Castonguay at mid court, then calmly hit Andrew Williams in the corner. Williams let it fly as the ball swished through the net to send the game into overtime.
Andy Scott had a team-high 21 points to lead the Pandas, including four 3-pointers. In addition to the game winner, Allard scored 10 more to finish the game with a dozen points. Other scoring was done by Jackson Sabattus (6), Nick Allard (5), Andrew Glidden (3), Finn Knowles (3), and Vince Skovronsky (1). With the win, Lee Academy currently sits at 2nd place in the heal point standings.
Gabe Castonguay netted a game-high and career-high 24 points for the Howlers, who drop to 7-8. Ryan Thompson, whose contested lay-up late in overtime gave PVHS the lead before Allard’s heroics, scored 10 on the night. Williams scored 9, Isaac Doore 4, and Gabe Reed ended up with 3.
The two teams turn around and play each other again on Thursday at Lee to close out the regular season.
