FORT KENT, Maine — The No. 6 Fort Kent girls are headed to Bangor following a 51-42 home court preliminary victory over No. 11 Mattanawcook Academy Tuesday evening.

The Warriors (10-7 overall) advance to the Class C North quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor where they will take on No. 3 Penobscot Valley (15-3).

The two squads did not meet during the regular season.

The Lynx of Lincoln led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. Fort Kent’s Lily Oliver contributed all eight points for the Warriors.

Fort Kent came back to take a narrow, 20-16, advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the game was knotted at 40-40 with just over three minutes to play. Back and forth turnovers kept things interesting, but the game ultimately came down to successful foul shots by two Fort Kent players — Oliver and Julia Cyr.

Oliver had a game-high 22 points including 10 free throws, six of which came in the fourth quarter. Cyr showed up for the Warriors in the fourth quarter with seven of her nine points coming with just over two minutes to play, including five points from the free throw line.

Larissa Daigle contributed eight points for the Warriors, including a 3-pointer.

Katelyn Thornton led the Lynx offense with 12 points. Isabella Farrington followed with 10 points.

“Mattanawcook played a really good game. Everyone fought hard which is to be expected in the prelims,” Fort Kent coach Kelly O’Leary said.

O’Leary said his team is feeling confident about its tournament potential.

“Penobscot is predicted to win the whole thing,” O’Leary said. “I like our chances. Our team is playing well. We’ll roll into Bangor and see what happens.”

Mattanawcook Academy ends its season with a 7-11 record.
