Brewer High School teammates Aaron Newcomb and Colby Smith are among the semifinalists for Mr. Maine Basketball announced Wednesday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
There were 10 semifinalists named in both boys and girls.
The award goes to the state’s top senior player and the winners will be announced at the McDonald’s Senior All-Star games at Husson University in Bangor on March 12.
Newcomb and Smith led the Witches to a 16-2 regular season record and the second seed in the Class A North Tournament.
Brewer is the only team to defeat top seed Nokomis of Newport in the regular season.
Brewer meets Skowhegan in the A North semifinals on Wednesday. Brewer ousted Lawrence of Fairfield 72-46 in its quarterfinal game.
The other eight semifinalists are Bangor’s Max Clark, Ellsworth’s Hunter Curtis, Cony of Augusta’s Luke Briggs, Edward Little of Auburn’s John Shea, Lewiston’s David Omasombo, South Portland’s Owen Maloney, Fort Kent’s Austin Delisle and Falmouth’s Brady Coyne.
Headlining the 10 girls semifinalists are Skowhegan High School point guard Jaycie Christopher and Windham’s Sarah Talon.
Christopher has led the River Hawks to an undefeated regular season and the top seed in Class A North.
Christopher can score from anywhere, is an exceptional facilitator and is also an outstanding rebounder and defender capable of a double-double every night and even a triple-double.
She will take her skills to Boston University in the fall.
Talon, who is headed to the University of Maine, averaged 17.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.4 steals and a Class AA North-leading 1.7 blocked shots.
The other semifinalists are Presque Isle’s Faith Sjoberg, who set a Class B tournament record with eight 3-pointers in quarterfinal win over Mount View of Thorndike and recently eclipsed the 1,000-point mark, Stearns standout point guard Alisyn Alley, Oxford Hills of South Paris’ Brooklyn Alexander, Scarborough’s Lindsay Fiorillo, Yarmouth’s Katelyn D’Appolonia, Wells’ Grace Ramsdell, Gorham’s Anna Nelson and Greely of Cumberland Center’s Chelsey Graiver.
