The notion of expelling Russia from the United Nations is short sighted and counterproductive. It abandons the potential of diplomacy for a dubious punishment. It leaves Russia to reinforce its worst impulses with one less reality check.

The UN represents the best aspirations and worst expediencies of the international community. Building that community demands working with its worst members. On the international stage, as in the schoolyard, “you can’t say, you can’t play” is a useful principle.
