Caden McDuffie, who quarterbacked Cape Elizabeth High School to its first Class C football state championship last fall, was named winner of the James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy on Sunday during a banquet in Portland.
McDuffie is the 50th recipient of the trophy, which recognizes the state’s top high school senior football player. The Fitzy was not presented last year as the 2020 tackle football season was canceled due to COVID-19.
He was one of three finalists for the award along with lineman Thomas Horton of Bonny Eagle High School in Standish and Will Leadbetter, a quarterback from Windham.
McDuffie passed for 1,406 yards with 26 touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 1,011 yards and 19 touchdowns last season, and passed for five touchdowns in the first half alone as the Capers capped off their 10-1 season with a 53-8 victory over Winslow in the state final.
McDuffie plans to attend Louisiana Christian University in Pineville, Louisiana, this fall.
