A fox, with its beautiful winter coat, is taking advantage of a free meal in western Maine in this video from BDN Contributor Allie Ladd.

Foxes eat a variety of things, from rabbits and small vermin including mice, voles and rats, to apples, corn, berries, snakes, insects, nuts and seeds, and of course, carrion, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The red fox is one of two species found in Maine. The other is a gray fox.

Red foxes have really good eyesight and hearing, and the ability to jump to about 6 feet high, making them especially talented at pouncing on prey, the MDIF&W said.

The fox’s natural enemy is the coyote, so foxes tend to live closer to people, which is something coyotes try to avoid, the department said.

This fox shouldn’t have to worry about a sneak attack by any predators here on the ledge at least.
