Gov. Janet Mills will lay out a response to Maine’s deadliest-ever mass shooting in her State of the State address at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Democratic governor is expected to roll out a package of gun and mental health reforms after 40-year-old Army reservist Robert Card II killed 18 people and injured another 13 on Oct. 25 at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston. She will also address recent storms that caused major flooding.
It will prompt a major discussion about gun restrictions in a state with few of them. More progressive Democrats support farther-reaching changes like 72-hour waiting periods and a more sweeping background check expansion like the one Maine voters rejected in 2016.
Mills is expected to begin speaking to a joint session of the Legislature at 7 p.m. She laid out details of an upcoming spending plan in a written address earlier in the day.
