Wow! A couple of newsworthy stories in a recent BDN digital edition. First off, the biggest surprise and disappointment is the story on the unbelievable salary for the University of Maine men’s ice hockey coach. Can one believe such an official should be receiving a salary of $425,000 plus an additional $15,000 starting after this year? What’s wrong with this picture? The coach currently makes $256,000 a year, and will be the highest paid state employee even surpassing the women’s hockey coach at $90,000.

The second item involves the Penobscot County Jail inviting a Bangor city councilor to tour the jail, as a move is afoot to anticipate building a much-needed new jail house. Excluded from the tour was a news reporter, denied the request apparently because it was not a public event, of all excuses. One would think the sheriff could really need such news coverage especially right now. I well remember my jail tour, by the former sheriff several years back, and believe me it wasn’t a pretty picture.
