An inmate at Cumberland County Jail in Portland has died, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday.

Correctional officers making routine rounds on Friday morning found the inmate unresponsive in their cell. Medical staff were unable to revive the person, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities are withholding the inmate’s name until they have notified the family. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the state’s chief medical examiner and the Portland Police Department.

The Portland Police Department, the Maine Department of Corrections and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer are investigating the death. The investigation is being overseen by the Maine Attorney General’s Office.
