The governor is correct to push an offshore wind turbine project, due to our country’s urgent need for more renewable energy. Given our energy predicament, some environmentalists and others advocate “saying yes” to constructing the port on Sears Island, despite inevitable degradation of a special island. I think this sobering choice would be defensible if it actually was the only viable option. It isn’t. I support offshore wind energy, but instead say “yes” to neighboring Mack Point as the best port terminal location. That means in this case “Yes, In My Backyard.”
Sprague Energy, Mack Point operators, wants the port there, in an already industrialized site across Long Cove from Sears Island. They commissioned industry-leading consultants to develop an efficient, workable plan. Estimates indicate construction costs and building time for the two sites are comparable.
As in many marine infrastructure projects, Mack Point will require dredging, but significantly less than originally estimated. Developing Mack Point would spare destruction of 100 acres of natural habitat on Sears Island, acres which sequester tons of carbon per year.
Sears Island, one of the largest undeveloped islands on the East Coast, is home to many marine and land species and bird migratory grounds.
If it can be avoided, and it can, why destroy natural resources and habitat?
Let’s bring the jobs and the port to Mack Point!
