A Waterville man was rescued by the Maine Warden Service after breaking an ankle during a hike in the Gulf Hagas region on Sunday.

Joshua Steele, 38, had been hiking along the Rim Trail near Jaws Waterfall with friends when he slipped on a rock and broke his ankle at around 4:30 p.m., according to Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti.

One of Steele’s friends was able to hike out of the trail and request help from a North Maine Woods gatehouse. Maine wardens and several volunteers with the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Greenville Fire Department responded and worked to reach Steele.

When first responders were able to locate Steele, they were able to stabilize the broken ankle and carry him out of the woods via stretcher and ATV to a waiting ambulance. Steele was transported to Greenville’s CA Dean Hospital at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, 12 hours after his injury was reported, where he received treatment for the broken ankle.
