The man killed by a collapsing retaining wall in Brownville on Tuesday afternoon has been identified.

Stephen Lane, 67, of Glenburn was working on the wall about 2:45 p.m. when it collapsed, according to the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders attempted to resuscitate Lane, but he succumbed to his injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

Construction started this spring on Railroad Avenue at the underpass. The sidewalk and retaining wall are being replaced under the railroad bridge.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the sheriff’s office are investigating the death.
