A stay in a hotel, Airbnb or other type of accommodation now costs more than ever. Average hotel prices nationwide rose by a whopping 54 percent between 2022 and 2023, according to Money.com, and though those prices have since fallen a little bit, they are still far above the pre-pandemic average. The same goes for Airbnbs and other vacation rentals.

For Mainers accustomed to affordably traveling within their own state, the higher rates can price them out of destinations that were once yearly pilgrimages.
