The Deer Isle Causeway was closed Friday afternoon after power lines fell on the roadway.

Versant spokesperson Tina Morrill told the Bangor Daily News the cause of the downed lines was “bird contact,” possibly related to an osprey nest, but was not immediately able to provide more information.

In an email at 3:15 p.m., Morrill said Versant crews expect to have power restored in approximately two hours.

The Stonington Fire Department in a Facebook post said one lane of the causeway reopened to traffic at 2:40 p.m. The department posted a photo of the downed lines and what appeared to be a burning nest atop one of the utility poles.

The causeway connects Deer Isle to Little Deer Isle, providing a link in the only driving route from Deer Isle to the mainland.
