Ellie Barker uncovers what some people may consider to be trash in this 2018 file photo. To Barker, it could by used as material for the furniture and decor she creates using found items. Credit: Aislinn Sarnacki / BDN

Frugal Mainers love a bargain. And by bargain, we mean it costs zero dollars. What better place to look for free stuff than at the town dump? By definition, those leaving things there assume they have no value. It’s the dump. You take trash there.

Au contraire: People have found gems at their local transfer station, amid the actual garbage. Perfectly rideable bikes. Perfectly functional tools. Vintage board games, toys and home decor. Guitars that, with a little know-how, can rock once again. There are even some town dumps, like ones in Hampden, South Portland and Farmington, that set up “swap shop” areas to facilitate such finds.

What’s the coolest or most useful thing you’ve ever found at a dump in Maine? Let us know in the form below, in the comments or by emailing us at news@bangordailynews.com. We want to hear about the incredible treasures you’ve found in the trash. Happy hunting!
