A house fire in the western Maine town of Mexico on Thursday morning claimed the life of one occupant, while another was rescued by firefighters.

The Oxford County emergency dispatch center received a 911 call at about 7:09 a.m. reporting a fire at 5 Tucker St. in Mexico, Maine State Police and the state fire marshal’s office said in a joint news release.

First responders arrived at the home while the fire was still burning, primarily in the area of the front porch.

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue a woman from the house. She was not injured, authorities said.

After the fire was extinguished firefighters found a deceased woman inside the house.

The woman’s body was brought to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Her identity has not yet been released.
