A man died early Thursday morning after crashing into a box truck on a Maine-New Hampshire interstate bridge.

Jacob Wolterbeek, 41, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was driving a Toyota Camry south on the Maine Turnpike on the Piscataqua River Bridge about 1:14 a.m. when he rear-ended a box truck stopped in traffic on the Maine side of the bridge, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Wolterbeek died at the scene, Moss said Thursday morning.

Wolterbeek was an 18-year veteran of the Biddeford Police Department, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was on his way home after a shift when the crash happened, the Biddeford Police Department said.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.

The crash shut down the turnpike’s southbound lanes for several hours. They have reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
