Update: Police have identified the victims.

Two people were killed in a head-on crash in Clifton on Wednesday morning, according to Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton

The crash happened around 10 a.m. on Rebel Hill Road, also known as Route 180, Morton said. Route 180 is expected to be closed until mid-afternoon as the crash is investigated.

The crash happened when a southbound vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with another vehicle heading in the opposite direction, Morton said. The crash was discovered by another driver coming across the scene.

No passengers were in either vehicle, and both drivers died at the scene, Morton said. The sheriff’s office is working to notify the victims’ relatives. Neither has been publicly identified.

One vehicle rolled over multiple times before stopping on its roof, catching fire and burning all the way through, Morton said.

The other vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is at the scene to help with clean up. Holden and Eddington firefighters responded as well.
